The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
